After getting a bye in the first week, the Brantford Bison Junior Varsity team played their first game of their 2019 Spring season on Saturday, resulting in a win against the Waterloo Predators at University Stadium in Waterloo.

The Bisons started the game off with first possession with Ryan Hill finding Isaac Cherewka who had a 51-yard run, giving Brantford the first touchdown of the game, and an early lead. Cherewka would find the end zone again and with a 14-yard run giving the Bisons a 14-0 after only four minutes of play.

The Predators tried to make a comeback, but it would not happen before Hill, once again, found an open player, this time being Andrew Cosborne, who scampered 23 yards to give Brantford a 21-0 lead after a touchdown. After Waterloo getting a 1st down and a 4-yard touchdown pass, the first quarter ended with the Bisons up 21-6.

Brantford’s defense was all over the second quarter, as Taye Lovell intercepted a pass at mid-field to help the Bisons takeover. Hill had a beautiful deep pass to Devon Hall, who makes the grab and gets Brantford into the red zone. The Bisons capped off the grab with three-yard touchdown run by Tanner Geards, the Bisons finish the first half up 28-6.

The third quarter was mostly quiet, until Cherewka fought and battled his way to the endzone for his third major of the game. Bisons now up 35-6.

Waterloo tried to close the gap in the fourth quarter, as Matt Lynn lobbed a 13-yard pass to Alex Suley, who got his second touchdown of the game. The crowd felt slight deja vu as Suley caught another pass from Lynn in the endzone just moments later.

Waterloo was making a solid attempt at a comeback late in the game but Brantford was not going down without a fight. Cherewka battled his way out a scramble at mid-field and scored his fourth major of the game.

”Great job by the boys.,” Coach Norm Kelly said following his team’s victory. “They worked hard as a team for a big win. We hope to keep this roll going when we play Hamilton this week.”

The Bisons prevail with a 42-22 victory to open their season. Their next game is at home this Saturday against Hamilton at 5:00pm.
